Yannis Kontos - Γιάννης Κόντος

Ο Γιάννης Κόντος γεννήθηκε στα Ιωάννινα το 1971. Σήμερα είναι ελεύθερος επαγγελματίας (freelance) φωτοειδησεογράφος.
Συνεργάτης των διεθνών Γαλλικών πρακτορείων SYGMA (1998-2000) και GAMMA (2001-2002) αλλά και του Αμερικανικού POLARIS IMAGES μέχρι σήμερα, ταξιδεύει για μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα καλύπτοντας τα σημαντικότερα γεγονότα σε όλο τον κόσμο.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα έχει καλύψει τους πρόσφατους πολέμους στο Ιράκ, το Αφγανιστάν και το Κόσοβο, την Οκτωβριανή επανάσταση στην πρώην Γιουγκοσλαβία το 2000 αλλά και την πτώση από την εξουσία του Slobodan Milosevic, τους καταστροφικούς σεισμούς στην Τουρκία το 1999, τις διαδηλώσεις κατά της παγκοσμιοποίησης στην Γένοβα το 2001, τις πολεμικές συρράξεις για το διαφιλονικούμενο Κασμίρ στα σύνορα Ινδίας-Πακιστάν το 2002, την αποχώρηση των Ισραηλινών στρατευμάτων από τον Νότιο Λίβανο το 2000, την κρίση των πυραμίδων στην Αλβανία το 1997, τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες της Αθήνας, το μεταναστευτικό πρόβλημα στα σύνορα ΗΠΑ-Μεξικού, την κηδεία του Πάπα Ιωάννη Παύλου Β’ και τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις στο Λονδίνο τον Ιούλιο του 2005.
Ακόμη δεκάδες πολύμηνες αποστολές για θέματα που άπτονται της σύγχρονης ειδησεογραφίας στα "θερμότερα" μέρη του πλανήτη όπως: την Παλαιστίνη, την Αίγυπτο, την Ιορδανία, το Πακιστάν, το Αφγανιστάν, την Π.Γ.Δ.Μ., την Ιαπωνία, την Δυτική Σαχάρα, την Βόρεια Κορέα, το Ιράν και τη Σιέρα Λεόνε.
Παράλληλα με την επαγγελματική του δραστηριότητα παρακολουθεί μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο τομέα της φωτοειδησεογραφίας στο πανεπιστήμιο Westminster του Λονδίνου.

Ασχολήθηκε με τον πρωταθλητισμό με οκτάχρονη καριέρα στο χώρο της κωπηλασίας κατακτώντας με τα χρώματα του Ναυτικού Ομίλου Ιωαννίνων αλλά και της Εθνικής Ελλάδος πανελλήνιες και διεθνείς διακρίσεις με σημαντικότερη την 3η Παγκόσμια νίκη στη Δίπωπο με πηδαλιούχο Εφήβων στο Παγκόσμιο Πρωτάθλημα Εφήβων, στο Ζέγκεντ της Ουγγαρίας, το 1989.
1996 - 2001
Απόφοιτος του Τμήματος Φωτογραφίας της Σχολής Γραφικών Τεχνών και Καλλιτεχνικών Σπουδών του Τ.Ε.Ι. Αθήνας.

2001
Επιλέχτηκε στους 12 καλύτερους φωτογράφους της γενιάς του και παραμένει μέχρι σήμερα ο μοναδικός Έλληνας που αποφοίτησε από το World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass στο Ρότερνταμ της Ολλανδίας, στο οποίο διδάσκουν τα μεγαλύτερα ονόματα στο χώρο της φωτοειδησεογραφίας.
2005-
Μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στην φωτοειδησεογραφία στο πανεπιστήμιο Westminster του Λονδίνου.

Yannis Kontos was born in Ioannina, Greece in 1971.
He received a BA degree in Photography at the Faculty of Graphic Design and Applied Arts of Athens' Technological Educational Institute in 2001 and a BA degree in Physical Education at the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1995.
He began shooting as a freelance for the Sygma Photo News and Gamma Presse Images. Since its creation in 2002, he is actively involved with Polaris Images producing photojournalism and feature work, covering major stories worldwide.
Recent assignments include coverage of the Iraqi conflict, the Athens Olympics, North Korea, Sierra Leone, the US-Mexican border, the Kosovo war in 1999, the October 2000 revolution in Yugoslavia till the fall of Milosevic, the devastating earthquake in Turkey in 1999, the pyramid crisis in Albania in 1997, the conflict in Macedonia in 2001, the G8 anti-globalization protests in Genoa in 2001, the crisis in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the tensions over the disputed Kashmir, the funeral of Pope John Paul II, the London attacks in July 2005, South Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Japan, Western Sahara and Iran.
His photographs have been published in: Time, Newsweek, Life, The New York Times, US News & World Report, Smithsonian Magazine, People, Columbia Journalism Review, Stern, Der Spiegel, Focus, Nouvel Observatuer, Paris Match, L’Express, Figaro magazine, Le Monde, Liberation, Le Figaro, The Independent, The Sunday Times Μagazine, The Observer, GEO, L' Espresso, Panorama, La Republica, El Pais and other well known publications around the globe.
He is currently studying at the University of Westminster in London for an MA in Photojournalism.
Passionately dedicated to his profession, he is committed to further improving his in-depth coverage of events as a photojournalist.
